Let’s not overcomplicate this.

If you’re Googling “why my marketing agency isn’t working,” you already know something’s off. You don’t end up here because everything is going great.

Most business owners stay with the wrong agency way too long. Not because it’s working, but because it’s easier than starting over. You already spent the money. You don’t want to deal with onboarding someone new. And if we’re being honest, a lot of agencies rely on the fact that you don’t fully understand what they’re doing anyway.

So you wait it out. And nothing changes. Here’s how to know it’s actually time to move on.

1. You don’t know what you’re paying for

If someone asked you what your marketing agency does for you each month, could you answer clearly? Not in a “they post on Instagram and run ads I think” kind of way. I mean actually explain it.

You should know:

  • what they’re working on

  • what the strategy is

  • what results you’re getting

If every update sounds like vague marketing buzzwords with no real explanation or numbers tied to it, that’s a problem. You’re not paying for mystery services.

2. You’re not seeing results… and no one can explain why

Marketing isn’t magic, but it also shouldn’t feel like throwing money into a black hole.

If leads aren’t coming in, sales aren’t increasing, or nothing has changed in months, your agency should be able to tell you exactly why and what they’re doing to fix it.

If instead you’re hearing things like:

  • “it takes time”

  • “we’re building awareness”

  • “the algorithm is weird right now”

…with no actual plan behind it, you’re getting stalled. Time alone does not fix bad strategy.

3. You’re doing more work than they are

This one is my favorite.

If you hired a marketing agency but you’re still:

  • coming up with all the ideas

  • writing captions

  • telling them what to post

  • reminding them to follow up on things

Then what exactly did you hire them for? You should not feel like you are managing your marketing agency. That defeats the entire purpose. A good agency takes things off your plate. Not adds to it.

4. There’s no real strategy — just random posting

Posting for the sake of posting is not a marketing strategy.

If your agency is just:

  • putting up content with no clear goal

  • running ads without explaining targeting or results

  • sending you posts that “look nice” but don’t do anything

You’re paying for activity, not results.

Everything in marketing should tie back to a goal:

  • more leads

  • more bookings

  • more purchases

  • stronger conversion

If no one is talking about that, that’s your answer.

5. You feel like a number, not a priority

You don’t need daily check-ins, but you should not feel like you’re chasing your own marketing team.

If:

  • emails take days to get answered

  • nothing feels proactive

  • you only hear from them when it’s time to invoice

That’s not a partnership. Marketing should feel like an extension of your business. Not like you hired someone who disappears unless you poke them.

So when should you actually switch marketing agencies?

If you’re reading this and thinking, “yeah… this is exactly what’s happening,” it’s probably time.

The truth is, a good marketing agency doesn’t just “do marketing.” They:

  • show you the numbers

  • explain what’s working and what’s not

  • adjust strategy quickly

  • actually care about your growth

And most importantly, they make you money. If that’s not happening, it’s not working. It’s that simple.

Final thought

Staying with the wrong marketing agency is more expensive than switching. Not just in what you’re paying them, but in the revenue you’re not making.
